Facts, informations and history of The Shard

The Shard - a modern glass skyscraper in London, built on the site of a 25-story Southwark Towers office building.

The skyscraper was removed from 2000 by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, the author of the Center Pompidou in Paris.

The idea for a skyscraper was first created at the end of the 20th century. The building was to replace the Southwark Towers built in 1976. The concept seemed perfect - a few minutes from the center of London, a transport center connected to the rail network and a subway station.

The project of the new 365-meter skyscraper was initially developed by the architectural firm Broadway Malyan. These plans were quickly reduced, a new project for the Italian architect Renzo Piano. A well-known architect designed a skyscraper for a little over 300 meters in the shape of a pyramid, with a glass structure.

London Tower Bridge plans, the same building was initially called, & nbsp; provoked the indignation of conservators who believe that the glass skyscraper does not fit into the historic quarter with low brick buildings. Despite the opposition, in 2008 Southwark Towers were pulled down and the Shard was started a year later. On March 30, 2012, the building reached a height of 25 meters.

When the London skyscraper has been completed, gain the name of the highest skyscraper in Europe. It was only a few months later that it was crossed by the Mercury City Tower in Moscow. Currently, Shard is still the best hotel in Europe.

95-story tower Shard grows above other buildings and is visible from a distance. The skyscraper looks particularly spectacular at night when viewed from the other side of the river. The facade of the building consists of several thousand windows, exactly from 11 thousand glass panels. Seemingly unfinished spire is a natural dissipation of excess heat and reducing the need for air conditioning.

The Shard is a multifunctional building, with offices, flats, a hotel and catering rooms. & nbsp; It has 72 residential floors, 25 office floors, three floors of restaurants, a 17-floor hotel, 13 floors and three, three-star view gallery, as well as an observation deck and nbsp; at level 72 and a swimming pool on the 52nd floor.

There are 44 elevators in the building of the site, including several two-level wind. They travel one at a speed of up to 6 meters per second.

The length of the wires in the building is 320 kilometers, up to the distance that the district of London from Paris.

The top floors of the skyscraper provide extraordinary views of the surrounding area. On the highest utilized floor, there is the highest terrace in the United Kingdom, a lookout offering stunning 360-degree views of the city. On this day, you can see the areas a few dozen kilometers away.

This landmark tower was the first building in the UK that broke the 1,000-foot-high barrier. It is almost twice as high as the famous London's "Ogórek".

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, the tower was redesigned to improve stability and shorten the possible evacuation time.

the total cost of the project exceeded 1.2 billion pounds and also covered the complete renovation of the neighboring railway and bus stations.

Financial issues plagued construction, but were resolved in 2008, when up to four banks in Qatar embraced 80% of shares in the project (purchase of CLS and Simon Halabi). All contracts have been secured.

The facade of The Shard is brilliant, because a team of six window cleaners is constantly cleaning it. Every week they take care of what they do, and after the end they start from the beginning, so their work never ends.

"Standing at almost 310 metres, the shard will be one of the tallest buildings in western europe. For me however, the height of the shard is only secondary. What is special is the solid and continuing relationship between two nations - qatar and britain - which has been an important factor in completing this project." - His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah Bin Saoud Al Thani, Governor of Qatar Central Ban
