The highest block of flats: The John Hancock Center in Chicago (USA) is 343.5 m high (100 floors); floors 44 - 92 are designed for apartments. The highest residential block is the 70-story Lake Point Tower in Chicago, which is 195 m high. It has 879 apartments.
The smallest house: The 19th-century fisherman's house in The Quay in Wales (UK) consists of two tiny rooms and a staircase. It is only 182 cm wide at the front, 309 cm high and 254 cm deep. The largest office building in the area is the building of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia (USA). The U.S. Department of Defense building was completed on January 15, 1943, and cost about 83 million dollars at that time. The outer edges of each of the five walls of the building are 281 m long. The five floors have a usable floor area of 604,000 m and the corridors are 28 km long. The building has 7,754 windows. It employs 23,000 civilian and military workers.
The most capacious dam: Considering the volume of the reservoir, the most capacious dam is the New Cornelia Tailings on the Ten Mile Wash River in Arizona (USA), which secures 209.5 million m? of water. It is an earth dam.
The largest palace: The Imperial Palace in the center of Beijing is a rectangular 960 x 750 m building and covers an area of 72 hectares. Its external outline has survived since the third Ming Dynasty Emperor. The Jung-Lo (1402-24), but the majority of its buildings (5 halls and 17 palaces) date back to the 18th century. The Palace of Versailles, 23 km south of the city, is located in the heart of the city. - The palace in Versailles, 23 km south of Paris, is 580 m long and has a façade with 375 windows. The building, completed in 1682 for Louis XIV, was built by 30,000 workers under the direction of Jules Hardouin-Mansart.
The highest office building: Petronas Twin Towers from Malaysia, completed in March 1996, distanced the tower Willis Tower, so far the highest building in the world. Their stainless steel towers, 73.6 m high, rise on over 88-story skyscrapers, increasing their height to 451.9 m. At the foot of Petronas Twin Towers, there will be a six-story shopping center and an underground parking lot for 5,000 cars. For comparison, Willis Tower in Chicago (USA) has 110 floors and a height of 443 meters. Petronas Twin Towers was designed by an American architect Cesar Pelli.
The longest dam in the world is the dam on the Dnieper River in Kiev (Ukraine), opened in 1964. Its length, measured at the crown, is 41.2 km.
The largest office complex to rent was the World Trade Center in New York with a total service area of 1114800 m2 in seven buildings including 406,000 m of each of the two twin skyscrapers. In each of them, there were 99 lifts and 43600 windows, which required 182880 m of glass. There were 50 thousand people working in the complex in 350 companies and organizations, and 70 thousand tourists visited it every day.
The oldest buildings: The oldest known man-made building is an irregular circle made of loosely arranged lava blocks. This building, which is one of the lowest cultural circles in the Lower Paleolithic period, is located in the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania and was discovered in 1960. Various traces of the monument are connected with it, such as the remains of bones on the threshing floor, whose age is estimated at 175000000 years. The oldest example discovered so far is the complex of 21 cottages with fireplaces or cavities lined with stones. The excavation was discovered on October 1965 in the suburb of Nice called Terra Amata and the buildings are believed to belong to the Achenhanian culture that existed 400,000 years ago.
The oldest inhabited house: Barton Manor in Pagham (UK) has elements dating back to Saxon times (around 800 A.D.).
The largest block of flats in Poland: In the 1960s in several Polish cities (Warsaw, Katowice, Gdańsk, Wrocław) the so-called super-housing units were built for about a thousand flats each. The largest of them is the Gdańsk "Falowiec" with a length of 860 m.
The largest columns: The largest construction columns are 21 m high and are located in the Hall of Columns in the Ammonium Temple in Karnak, in the former Thebes, the ancient capital of Upper Egypt. They were built during the reign of Ramesses II (the nineteenth dynasty), around 1270 BC.
The highest tower: The highest building and free-standing tower in the world (as opposed to a lashing mast) is the 63 million dollar tower - CN Tower in Toronto (Canada), which rises to a height of 553.34 m. The tower was completed in 1975. The 416-seat restaurant rotates in the "Sky Gondola" at an altitude of 351 m, with a view of the hills at a distance of 120 km.
The largest palace: The palace named Istana Nurul Iman, belonging to the sultan of Brunei, located in the capital of the country Bandar Seri Begawan, was completed in 1984 for a sum, it is said, of 300 million pounds sterling (1.3 billion zlotys). It is the largest residence in the world, consisting of 1788 rooms and 257 toilets. The underground garage houses 153 Sultan's cars.
The highest dam: The diving dam on the Waksh River in Tajikistan is currently the highest (300 m) dam in the world.
The longest bridge span: The longest span with a length of 1410 m has the Humber Estuary Bridge in Humberside (UK). Its construction, which cost 96 million pounds, was carried out in 1972-80. The carrying towers are 162.5 m high, and the curvature of the Earth makes their peaks 3.6 cm more distant from each other than the base. Taking into account the side spans named Hessle and Burton, the bridge has a length of 2.22 km.
The highest bridge over the water: The bridge, where the roadway is at the highest distance from the water surface, was built over the Royal Gorge, where the river Arkansas flows (Colorado, USA). The bridge is situated 321 m above the water level. It is a suspension bridge with a main span of 268 m. It was commissioned in 1976. The highest railway bridge in the world is the Mala Reka viaduct in Kolaśin on the Belgrade - Bar route. It is 198 m high and was opened in 1976.
The widest long-span bridge is 48.8 m wide Sydney Harbour Bridge (Australia). The bridge is crossed by two railway lines, an eight-lane road, a bicycle path, and a pedestrian walkway.
The highest-lying buildings: The highest-lying residential buildings are at Fort Basisi, on the M?na Pass (31°04'N, 79°24'E) on the border between India and Tibet. They were built at an altitude of 5990 m. In April 1961 a three-room cottage was discovered at an altitude of 6600 m. on Cerro Llullaillaco (6723 m), on the Argentinean-Chinese border, which is believed to be from the late sub-Columbian period (ca. 1480).
The longest menhir (an oblong stone, vertical in the Earth): The longest known menhir is Grand Menhir Brisé in Locmariaquer, Brittany (France). Originally it was 18 m tall and weighed 300 t, but now it has disintegrated into four parts.
The longest tunnel: The longest tunnel is the 169 km long Delaware Water Supply Tunnel (New York).
The longest railway tunnel: It is the Seikan Tunnel in Japan, 53.9 km long. The newly built St. Gotthard Rail Tunnel in Switzerland with a length of 57 km will hold this record after construction. The longest building: In Osaka Bay (Japan) on the artificial island was built an airport 4 km long and 1 km wide. Kansai International Airport has so far cost about 15 trillion dollars. Kansai Airport Terminal is 1.7 km long, making it the longest building in the world.
The highest tower made entirely of wood: It is the Gliwice Radio Station built in 1935. The larch wood construction is 111 meters high.
