Facts, informations and history of India Gate

The Gateway of India is not only an architectural work of art, but also a national symbol of India with which soldiers who gave their lives for the country are commemorated. It is a place of deep historical and cultural significance and a popular landmark and tourist attraction in Delhi.

The Gateway of India was built as a memorial to the British and Indian soldiers who fell during the First World War and the border conflicts that took place between 1919 and 1921 on the border of Afghanistan and the tribal regions in the north-western areas of British India. And also in the Indian War of Independence (1947-1948), the Sino-Indian War (1962) and the Indo-Pakistani War (1971).

The monument was designed by British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and was completed in 1931. The gate is approximately 42 metres high, 9 metres wide and 2.3 metres deep.

The monument is constructed of red sandstone, a typical material used in many buildings in Delhi. This gives the India Gate a warm red hue and a unique appearance.

It was originally known as the 'Delhi Memorial', but was renamed the 'Gateway of India' after India's independence in 1947.

The Gateway of India is a monumental triumphal arch that resembles the architecture of Roman triumphal arches. This flame is surrounded by eight metal lotus leaves, the shape of which symbolises India.

At the top of the Gate is the inscription 'INDIA', as well as an inscription in Sanskrit that reads 'Amar Jawan Jyoti', meaning 'Eternal Flame of the Warrior'. Next to it are the dates written in Roman characters: MCMXIV (1914 on the left) and MCMXIX (1919 on the right).

In the centre of the India Gate is the Flame Monument, made of white marble, which is surrounded by an enclosed area. This eternal flame is dedicated to the memory of fallen soldiers and is maintained by the Indian authorities.

There are inscriptions on the Gate, including the names of soldiers who have fallen in various conflicts. It is a kind of 'book of remembrance' that commemorates their service. There are also various arches and architectural details such as bas-reliefs depicting World War I scenes and inscriptions related to the soldiers.

The Gateway of India has become an important national symbol of India and is frequently visited by locals and tourists. This place often serves as a venue for gatherings and celebrations of important national events.

The prototype of the Gateway of India was the Parisian 'Arc de Triomphe'.

There is an extensive area around the Gateway of India, which is a popular place for walking and recreation. There are also other important monuments in the area, such as the Presidential Palace and the Ministry of Defence.
