The bridge connects San Francisco with the county of Martin, has a length of over 2.8 km and lies 67 m above the surface of the water.

During the construction which consumed many victims among workers, they fought against tides, strong currents and thick fog. The bridge designed by engineer Joseph Strauss for over 20 years was the longest suspension bridge in the world - 1280 m between the twin towers rising 227 m above the water level during high tide.

The ropes supporting the bridge are 93 cm in diameter and consist of 27572 separate cable strands. Each tower withstands the load of all ropes of 95,000 tons, and each mounted on the edge of the blockade had to withstand a tension of 28.5 thousand tons. The length of wires used to make the ropes would be enough to circle the Earth three times.

Every day, 120,000 cars cross the bridge, the pedestrian path running along the bridge is very popular, so that it quickly became the symbol of San Francisco.

The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest hanging bridge until 1965, when the Verranzo-Narrows bridge in New York was built 18 meters longer.

Since its inception, the Golden Gate Bridge has witnessed approximately 1,600 suicide battles. Approximately 98% of these attempts result in death from water hammering, drowning or hypothermia.
