Facts, informations and history of Notre Dame Cathedral

The cathedral is 130 meters long, 48 meters wide, the height of the vault in the main aisle is over 35 meters. The needle made of wood covered with lead sheet is 40 meters high.

The façade of the cathedral consists of two towers, each 70 meters high, where the top is led by 387 stairs.

An important element of Notre Dame are stained glass and rosettes, especially the huge northern rosette shimmering with thousands of colors, which shows an unforgettable play of lights. Another very important element of the cathedral are the bells, in the northern tower there are as many as four rendered of bronze. The largest of them weighs 1915 kg, the smallest 763 kg. In the south tower there is a 13 ton Bell Bourdon. Bells ring three times a day, and Bourdon only for big holidays.

In the building there are also organs from the 18th century, having 6,000 pipes and 5 keyboards. 1300 oaks were used to make the wood vault.

Inside the Chair one of the most valuable relics is stored - Crown of Thorns.

The cathedral was partially destroyed during the French Revolution, then transformed into a warehouse, finally returning to the church in 1802.

It was thanks to Victor Hugo and his novel published in 1831 that the public was able to interest and vote on the idea of renovating the monument.

Based on the law of 1905, the owner of the Notre Dame Cathedral is the French state, but the Catholic Church has an eternal right to use it.
