Facts, informations and history of Louvre

The Louvre took its origin from the fortress. At the beginning King Philip II of August ordered the construction of a massive 30-meter tower, 4 m thick walls. King Charles V expanded the fortress to the palace, then King Franciszek I commissioned a completely new project. During the reign of Louis XIV, work on the construction of the so-called "Old Louvre" was completed. From 1805, Napoleon I ordered a thorough renovation of the "Old Louvre" and the construction of the "New Louvre".

After the French Revolution, the Louvre became the National Museum of France.

Currently, the palace - museum team consists of: two main parts: Old Louvre - with four wings and the New Louvre, surrounded by galleries and palaces "Place du Carrousel" , reaching up to the Tuileries pavilion.

In the middle of the 19th century, two pavilions were placed on the square: I'Orangerie and Jen de Paume.

The Louvre did not always serve as a museum, until the 16th century it was a fortress. During World War II, the Nazis turned the Louvre into a warehouse where stolen works of art were stored.

Currently Louvre is visited annually by almost two million tourists who are traveling 15 kilometers to see the whole complex which includes min. 255 exhibition rooms gathering such works as "Mona Lisa", "Statue of Venus from Milo" or "Nike from Samothrace", and Grande Galerie, Reserve or Laboratoire, where fakes are detected.

In the museum, over 380,000 works of art have been collected, of which only about 35,000 are presented.

The most famous painting in the world - Mona Liza - apart from protection by bulletproof glass has its own security guards, who watch closely the crowds of tourists before the painting.

Currently, the Louvre art collection is divided into sections: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and Rome, Ancient Middle East, Islamic Art, Sculpture, Painting, Art Crafts, Drawing and Graphics.

Visiting the museum begins by entering the glass pyramid built in the 1980s on the basis of President Mitterrand's idea. There are cash registers, information desk, shop and toilets.

The 21-meter glass pyramid is one of four, the other three smaller pyramids surround it in Napoleon's courtyard.

The Louvre is divided into three pavilions, which makes visiting a bit easier. They are: Sully, Denon and Richelieu.

The museum underwent a major renovation in 1981. After completion of the work, the Louvre doubled its area to 6 ha, thus becoming one of the largest museums in the world.

The length of the building is 850 meters.

Every first Sunday of the month you can enter the museum free of charge.

In the capital of the United Arab Emirates - Abu Dhabi is the second museum of the Louvre.
