The dam was built to catch water from the Venford brook as it makes it way down from Holne Moor to the River Dart on Southern Dartmoor. Easily reached by road, the road runs over the dam. Completed in 1907, the Dam holds approximately 198 million gallons of water and covers an area of approximately 33 acres.
