Construction of the church started in the 1870s. The magnificent Gothic structure was meant to be a replacement for St. Peter’s Church. Following a series of problems, including parish infighting, financial difficulties and a damaging storm, it was abandoned on the eve of its completion. Today, the picturesque ruins are a protected historic monument and part of the St. George's World Heritage Site.
