Birthplace of Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg who was one of the leading members of the failed 20 July plot of 1944 to kill Adolf Hitler and remove the Nazi Party from power in World War II Germany. Along with Henning von Tresckow and Hans Oster, he was one of the central figures of the German Resistance movement within the Wehrmacht.

The castle was buildt in 1480 and several times rebuildt. 1748 it was taken over by Freiherr Johann Albrecht Schenk von Stauffenberg of the Wülfinger ancestry line. That line had it until 1833 when Franz Schenk von Stauffenberg of the Amerdinger Line took overabecause the last of the Wülfingers died. The castle was in such a bad shape, nearly a ruin so he build it up as it stands today.

The Amerdingers had it until the year 2000 when Markwart Schenk von Stauffenberg died, one of the last Jettinger Stauffenbergs. Allready 1983 it was sold to Hieronymus Graf Wolff Metternich.
