The bridge known as "Leif the Lucky (or Miðlína) Bridge" spans the Álfagjá rift valley in southwest Iceland - The boundary between the Eurasian and North American continental tectonic plates. The rift is currently about 18.3 metres wide and 6.1 metres deep and it is widening by an average of 2 cm per year (source). One end of the bridge therefore rests freely on the ground to take care of this expansion. It was constructed in 2002 and is named in honour of Icelandic explorer Leif Eriksson who travelled from Europe to America 500 years before Columbus.
