Black Hawk Statue or The Eternal Indian

The Black Hawk Statue, or The Eternal Indian is a sculpture by Lorado Taft and started in 1908. The statue was dedicated in 1911 and stands 125 feet above the Rock River, although the statue itself is only 48 feet (15 m). The site was chosen as Taft and other artists used to walk along the bluff, enjoying the view. The Black Hawk was inspired by the real Sauk leader "Black Hawk" who fought against the United States in 1812 and in the Black Hawk War in 1832. The statue suggests an unconquered spirit.
