Big Ben will be silent for four years

The famous London bell of the clock tower of the British parliament - Big Ben will be silent from August 21 2017 for up to 4 years. The chamber of municipalities informed that the planned renovation of the building will not be completed until 2021.

As part of the maintenance work, the clock will be dismantled and thoroughly restored. The building itself will also be expanded, an elevator will be installed in it, and a kitchen and toilet will be built.

The cost of renovation of this 160-year-old monument entered into the UNESCO list is to amount to 29 million pounds.

Starting from 1859, this bell weighing 13.7 tons resounded every hour and became almost a symbol of Great Britain. During work, at least one of the four clocks will constantly work, indicating to the tourists and residents the correct time.

On Monday morning the bell will sound for the last time. Clock keeper, Steve Jaggs invites Londoners to come to the square in front of the parliament to listen to his last strokes before the 4-year break.
