World Trade Center

Facts, informations and history of World Trade Center

The World Trade Center (WTC) in New York is a complex that will forever remain in the memory not only of Americans, but also of the whole world. Consisting of seven buildings, the most famous were its two twin towers, which became an icon of the city and a symbol of strength and modernity. In this article we will present the history of the WTC, the most important facts, curiosities and dimensions of these monumental structures.

The birth of a symbol: construction history and early years

The World Trade Center, designed by the Japanese architect Minoru Yamasaki, in cooperation with Antonio Brittiochi, began its life in the 1960s. The idea to build the complex was initiated by David Rockefeller and the Governor of New York, Nelson Rockefeller. The goal was to create a world trade center that would emphasize New York's global position.

The first construction works started on August 5, 1966. It was a huge undertaking that required the involvement of thousands of employees and the use of the latest engineering technologies. After six years of intensive work, on April 4, 1973, the complex was officially opened. The twin towers, constituting the central point of the WTC, were the tallest buildings in the world at that time. For two years after completion, they were the tallest buildings in the world.

Twin Towers: Architecture and Technical Data

The World Trade Center's twin towers, known as the North Tower (One World Trade Center) and the South Tower (Two World Trade Center), dominate the New York skyline. Each tower had 110 floors and a height of 415.22 m (South Tower) and 527 m with the TV antenna (North Tower). At the time of opening, both towers had the largest usable area in the world - 406,000 m2. m².

Technical innovations and functionality

The towers were equipped with 99 elevators, of which 23 were express, moving at a speed of up to 8.4 m/s. The total length of the shafts was 30 km. The complex offered a wide range of services and amenities: offices, shops, hotel rooms, restaurants, parking and a metro station. The WTC was also impressive in terms of infrastructure. There were 43,600 windows, which required 182,880 m² of glass. In addition, telephone cables in the complex were over 30 km long. 50 thousand every day people worked in over 500 companies and organizations, and the complex was visited by 150,000. tourists.

The highest observation deck

On the 107th floor of the South Tower there was the famous observation deck, the highest open-air observatory in the world. In good weather you could see 45 miles in every direction. The terrace could be reached by elevator in just 58 seconds.

Structure strength

181,400 tons of steel were used to build the towers. The structure was designed to withstand extreme conditions, including high winds that caused the towers to deflect sideways by 3 feet. Despite their massiveness, the towers were architecturally delicate, which led critics to call them "Lego-blocks".

Tragedies and incidents: fires and terrorist attacks

Fire in 1975

On February 13, 1975, a fire broke out in the North Tower, which was extinguished after three hours. Although the damage was significant, no one was killed. The fire revealed some irregularities in the fire protection system, including the lack of a sprinkler system and non-flammable telephone cables.

Coup in 1993

The first serious terrorist attack took place on February 26, 1993, when a van filled with 700 kilograms of ammonium nitrate exploded in the underground garage of the first tower. The explosion created a crater 5 stories deep and 7 meters wide. As a result of the attack, six people died and over a thousand were injured or burned. The towers were cleaned, repaired and reopened less than a month after the accident.

The attack of September 11, 2001

On September 11, 2001, the world was shocked by the largest terrorist attack in history, which took place at the World Trade Center. On that day, terrorists from the Al-Qaeda organization hijacked four passenger planes. Two of these planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were directed towards the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

Course of events

  • 8:46 AM: American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower (WTC 1) between the 93rd and 99th floors.
  • 9:03 AM: United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower (WTC 2) between the 77th and 85th floors.

As a result of these impacts, fires broke out and weakened the structures of the buildings. The fire, fueled by jet fuel, spread quickly, preventing many people from escaping from the upper floors.

Towers collapse

  • 9:59 AM: The south tower (WTC 2) collapsed first, 56 minutes after the plane hit.
  • 10:28 AM: The North Tower (WTC 1) collapsed 102 minutes after impact.

The collapse of the towers caused massive destruction in the area. Burying thousands of tons of debris beneath them, they destroyed or severely damaged nearby buildings, including WTC 3, WTC 4, WTC 5, WTC 6 and WTC 7, which collapsed at 5:20 p.m. on the same day.

Number of victims

2,973 people died in the attacks, including 343 firefighters, 60 policemen and 8 paramedics who took part in the rescue operation. There were also six Poles among the victims. Many people were killed by the immediate impact, while others were trapped on the upper floors and died when the towers collapsed.

Effects of the attack

Economic: The destruction of the WTC had serious economic consequences, not only for New York, but also for the entire world. Losses were estimated at billions of dollars. As a result of the attack, numerous company offices, banks, shopping centers and communication infrastructure were also destroyed.

Political and Military: The September 11 attack marked the beginning of the global war on terrorism. The United States launched military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq aimed at eliminating al-Qaeda leaders and overthrowing regimes supporting terrorism.

Social and Cultural: The attack had a profound impact on American and global society. It strengthened the sense of uncertainty and threat, influenced changes in security policy and border control, and increased surveillance over citizens.

Heritage and commemoration

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum was established on the site of the destroyed complex, commemorating the victims of the attack and documenting the events of September 11. Two huge swimming pools, located where the twin towers stood, are engraved with the names of all those who died on that tragic day.

New World Trade Center

As part of the reconstruction of the WTC site, a new complex was created, the central point of which is One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the United States, measuring 541 meters. The new WTC project also includes other office buildings, a shopping center and a transport center.

Despite the tragic events that took place in 2001, the World Trade Center remains a symbol of resilience and hope. The new complex, together with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, is a tribute to those who lost their lives and proof of the strength with which New York and the entire world were able to recover from one of the greatest tragedies in history.

Honours and awards

The World Trade Center, both as a complex and its architects, has won numerous distinctions and awards. The project by Minoru Yamasaki and Antonio Brittiochi has been awarded many times for its innovation, modernity and contribution to the development of architecture.

The towers were considered an engineering marvel and inspired many subsequent projects around the world. The complex has won awards from organizations such as the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the International Association of Structural Engineers (IASE). It attracted attention due to its unique design and innovative technological solutions.

Philippe Petit: spectacular tightrope walk

One of the most memorable events related to the WTC was Philippe Petit's crossing. On August 7, 1974, a tightrope walker walked on a rope suspended between the towers at a height of 409 m. His daring feat attracted the attention of the entire world and became a permanent part of the history of New York skyscrapers.

Influence on pop culture

The World Trade Center, also known as the WTC, has appeared in many films that perpetuated its image in pop culture and showed its importance in the context of the events of September 11. Here are some of the most significant productions:

"Man on Wire" (2008). The documentary directed by James Marsh tells the story of Philippe Petitt, who in 1974 walked on a rope stretched between the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The film won an Oscar for best feature-length documentary and numerous other awards. It shows not only the technical challenges and emotions associated with this unique feat, but also the background and atmosphere of the times when the WTC was the central point in New York.

"World Trade Center" (2006). A film directed by Oliver Stone, which presents the dramatic events of September 11, 2001 from the perspective of two firefighters stuck in the rubble of the destroyed complex. Nicolas Cage and Michael Peña starred. The film tries to convey the real feelings and difficulties that the characters had to struggle with, as well as a tribute to the heroes who tried to save others.

"United 93" (2006). Directed by Paul Greengrass, this film reconstructs the events on board United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked by terrorists and crashed in Pennsylvania. The film also presents the context of the attacks on the World Trade Center and their impact on the entire rescue operation. "United 93" is known for its realistic approach to tragic events and its emotional charge.

"The Avengers" (2012). The film directed by Joss Whedon, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, contains several scenes in which the ruined WTC can be seen in the background. Although the main plot of the film is the adventures of superheroes, the presence of the destroyed towers is intended to create the impression of disaster and chaos in New York, being the result of the actions of a super villain.

"Escape from New York" (1981). A science fiction film directed by John Carpenter, in which the WTC appears in a futuristic version as part of a dystopian world. Although the film takes place in an alternate version of New York, the destroyed towers are used as part of the vision of the destroyed city.

"The Day After Tomorrow" (2004). A disaster film directed by Roland Emmerich that depicts New York destroyed by catastrophic climate change. In one scene, the WTC towers are used as a backdrop for an oppressive atmosphere and special effects, showing the destruction in a global catastrophe.

These films show how the World Trade Center has been woven into a variety of narratives, from historical documentaries to drama and science fiction, reflecting its place in history and culture.

Heritage and memory: the new World Trade Center

Despite the tragedy, the World Trade Center remains in people's memory as a symbol of courage and hope. After the 2001 attack, a decision was made to rebuild the complex. In place of the destroyed towers, a new building was built, One World Trade Center, which is currently the tallest building in New York and one of the tallest in the world, measuring 541 meters.

The new WTC complex also includes other buildings, such as 2 WTC, 3 WTC, 4 WTC and 7 WTC, and Memorial Plaza, a memorial site for the victims of the attack. The land development design was developed by architect Daniel Libeskind.

Summary

The World Trade Center was not only an icon of New York, but also a symbol of human perseverance and innovation. Despite the tragic events that ended the life of the twin towers, the memory of the WTC is kept alive through numerous monuments, cultural events and presence in the media and art. This is a place that will forever remain a symbol of human perseverance and hope.

Moim zdaniem to wysoko postawione osoby z USA zleciły ten atak aby mieć pretekst do wkroczenie na terytoria państw bogatych w ropę i inne cenne złoża.

Teraz gdy to pisze a robie to 7 kwietnia 2008 roku prawie placze.
