Facts, informations and history of Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is for almost nine centuries the main outside of the London residence of the English monarchs. It stands majestically over the Thames, its towers, defensive walls and machicules.

In the middle of the castle there is a cylindrical donjon (Round Tower), on both sides there is a guard yard, and the whole is surrounded by defensive walls. The eastern courtyard is called the upper one and the western one is lower. The private apartments of the present monarch, Elisabeth II, are located on the east side of the upper courtyard and are closed to visitors.

On the north side there are state apartments, and at the entrance there is a famous 40-room doll house, with five bathrooms and elevators.

There are a thousand rooms in Windsor Castle. The biggest room in the castle is the Hall of the Holy. George, which is 55.5 meters long and 9 meters wide.

The main building of the lower court is the chapel of St. Jerzy, where the banners of the giants of the Order of the Garter hang over the stalls in the presbytery. Many kings are buried in the chapel.

The history of the castle dates back to the 11th century, when William the Conqueror built a wooden fortress here, then the castle was rebuilt several times by Edward III and Charles II, and finally he received the present shape .

This largest inhabited castle in the world, together with the entire complex, covers an area of 5 hectares. It is 800 meters long and its surface area is 45,000 m².

The complex includes the famous 14th century round tower, monastery, Norman gate, the tower of Edward III, the North Terrace, the Gate of King Henry VIII, the late Gothic Chapel of St. Jerzy and the Police Hour Baszta.

The walled castle has two courtyards: the eastern courtyard called the upper and west called the lower one. On the east side of the upper courtyard there are private apartments of Queen Elizabeth II. They are closed to visitors, due to the fact that the queen spends many weekends here, accepting both official and private guests.

This is one of the major tourist attractions in Great Britain visited by about one million tourists every year.
