Facts, informations and history of Warsaw radio mast in Konstantynów

Radio mast Warsaw was the highest construction ever built by man. He was almost 647 m tall, which is 140 more than Tapei 101.

In 1970, in Konstantynów near Gąbin (about 90 km from the center of Warsaw), the construction of a modern center of the Warsaw Radio and Television Center began. His heart was supposed to be a gigantic mast. Its construction began in 1972 and was completed after as much as 2 years, on May 18, 1974, which is a very long construction time as for the mast.

As a reference point you can take a very similar KVLY-TV mast, which was built for 33 days. The contractor for all the works was known Mostostal.

The official opening and start of radio broadcast took place on July 30, 1974.

The mast of Radio Warszawa broadcasted a signal at 225 kHz long waves. His signal was heard throughout Europe, East Asia, North Africa, and even in the USA and Canada. It is hardly surprising, since the transmitter's power was 2 MW.

The entire structure weighed 550 tons and was made entirely of steel. The cross-section of the mast was an equilateral triangle with a side length of 4.8 meters. The mast structure was divided into 86 sections, each with a height of 7.5 meters. The main supporting elements are made of steel pipes with a diameter of 24 cm. Depending on the location, the wall of the pipe was from 8 to 34 mm thick.

The mast was held vertically by five sets of guy ropes, a total of 15 ropes with a diameter of 5 cm.

Unfortunately, on August 8, 1991, around 18:00, the mast collapsed. The repair work was then underway, and the incorrect tension of the stays was assumed to be the main cause of the crash.

The authorities planned to rebuild the mast, which the local residents did not agree to.

The successor of the mast in Konstantynów was the radio station in Solec Kujawski, whose tallest mast is only 335 meters long.

faktycznie ta informacja o ofiarach to błąd.

No wiec jak bylo?
