Facts, informations and history of Palace of Versailles
Construction was to last for decades giving employment to thousands of people. Versailles gardens, with countless fountains, grottos and sculptures, designed by André Le Notre, were the biggest attraction, there were also fancy performances, operas and plays. These gardens of Versailles occupy over 100 hectares. They abound in deliberately planned views, promenades (walking park or boulevard road, usually attractively situated in terms of view) and terraces and the "Grand Canal" in their own little Venice.
The palace consists of a main projection and elongated side wings. From the front there are three more courtyards framed by the wings of the palace: Cour des Ministres, Cour Royale and Cour de Marbre.
The size of the palace itself is impressive: the garden elevation is 640 m long, and its center is the Mirror Hall with dimensions: 72 m long, 10 m wide and 13 m high. Opposite 17 windows opening onto the gardens, huge mirrors are hung.
In Versailles there are 2143 windows, 1252 fireplaces and 67 descents stairs. In the garden there are about 1,400 fountains, using water pumped from the Seine River.
Versailles became the residence of Louis XIV, and soon afterwards the whole French court moved there. After the death of Louis XIV, an opera salon and a palace called Petit Trianon were built. In 1789, the French Revolution reached Versailles and the palace was conquered.
In this palace, on June 28, 1919, the famous Treaty of Versailles was signed during World War I.
