Facts, informations and history of Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal, one of the most recognizable monuments in the world, is not only an icon of India, but also a symbol of eternal love. Built by Emperor Shah Jehan of the Mughal dynasty in honor of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal attracts millions of tourists from all over the world. This spectacular building is not only an architectural masterpiece, but also a living testimony to the rich history and culture of India.

History of the creation of the Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal was built between 1632 and 1653 and took 22 years to complete. The construction of this monumental tomb was Shah Jehan's tribute to Mumtaz Mahal, his third wife, who died while giving birth to their fourteenth child. Shah Jehan promised his wife that he would build her the most beautiful tomb in the world, and he actually fulfilled his promise.

20,000 workers from various parts of Asia, as well as from France and Italy, took part in the construction of the Taj Mahal. They were the best artists and craftsmen who created something that still amazes with its beauty and precision of workmanship. The marble used to build the Taj Mahal came from quarries in Rajasthan, over 320 km away. This heavy, white marble is decorated with thousands of precious and semi-precious stones, which give the building an extraordinary shine.

Architecture and symbolism of the Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is known for its onion-shaped shape and symmetry, which makes it unique in the world. All four sides of the building are perfectly identical, creating a harmonious whole regardless of the point of view. The central dome itself is 24.5 meters high and 17.7 meters in diameter, which gives the building a monumental appearance.

Inside the Taj Mahal are the false sarcophagi of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jehan, with their actual tombs located on the lower level. The entire interior and exterior of the tomb is covered with calligraphy that identifies and praises Mumtaz Mahal. This calligraphy, made of black marble, adds elegance and mysticism to the building.

Treasures of the Taj Mahal

When the Taj Mahal was ready, Mumtaz Mahal's coffin was covered with a layer of pure gold, and Shah Jehan sprinkled it with pearls and diamonds. In front of the building stood 2,000 soldiers who guarded these fabulous treasures day and night. The marbles use 28 types of precious and semi-precious stones, including turquoise from Tibet and jade from China.

Unfortunately, many of these precious stones were torn off the walls by the British during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Despite this, the Taj Mahal still delights with its beauty and richness of decorations.

Surroundings of the Taj Mahal

The route to the Taj Mahal leads through an impressive gate and then through a wonderful walled garden. The Taj Mahal complex includes a large garden, a reflection pool, a mosque and other mausoleums. These elements create a harmonious whole that emphasizes the majesty of the main building.

The garden around the Taj Mahal was designed in accordance with Persian and Islamic traditions, which gives it a unique character. The reflecting pool, located on the main axis of the building, enhances the effect of symmetry and makes the Taj Mahal seem to float above the water.

Renovations and protection of the Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal building underwent extensive renovation in the late 19th century, completed in 1908. The renovation was ordered by Lord Curzon, the then viceroy of British India, who was fascinated by the beauty and historical significance of this building. Thanks to his efforts, the Taj Mahal regained its former glory and became even more popular among tourists.

In 1983, the Taj Mahal was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which further emphasized its importance as one of the most important monuments in the world. In 2007, the Taj Mahal was elected one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, receiving over 100 million votes.

Awards and distinctions

The Taj Mahal has won many prestigious awards and distinctions that highlight its global significance and cultural value. In addition to being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 and selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, the Taj Mahal has also been distinguished as one of the most beautiful places in the world by numerous tourism and cultural organizations. p>

Pozdrawiam
