Facts, informations and history of Schönbrunn Palace

Schonbrunn was built as a palace and summer residence of numerous ruling families.

Construction started at the end of the 17th century, but the history of the palace goes much further. Emperor Mathias II, returning from hunting near the Katterburg residence, found a fountain with crystal clear water, which he called "Schöner brunner". (Wonderful fountain).

1,441 wonderfully painted rooms with extravagant interiors. The rooms are large, beautifully decorated with red, white and gold colors.

It was expanded and decorated to the early nineteenth century. The palace is surrounded by a French garden designed and founded in the eighteenth century. A place of numerous historical events, including conclusion of a treaty between Prussia and France in 1805, a place of peace between Austria and Napoleon I in 1809.

History carries with the walls of this palace: Mozart composed his works here, Marie Antoinette was brought up here, he lived here Napoleon, Kennedy and Kruschev signed a peace treaty here .

At the top of the hill is the Gloriette observation platform, from where you can admire the spectacular panorama of Vienna.

In 1746, the theater was built in the northern wing. The fountains were added in 1780.

You can not forget about the baroque park with magnificent flowers, sculptures and fountains. The estate has a Tierpark, the oldest zoo in the world, built in 1752 by Marie Terese. Currently, the palace houses a museum.

The palace attracts 6.7 million visitors a year annually.
In December 1966, Schonbrunn was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
