Facts, informations and history of Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein is a fairy-tale castle, unusual, resembles theater scenography, is decorated with garlands of balconies and lots of towers, it was only one of several palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria . You can see two more, and Ludwik had plans for many more.

The interior of the Neuschwanstein castle is a veritable orgy of different architectural styles, a Moorish-Gothic-Baroque mixture with both stalactites and a throne room boiling with Byzantine splendor and huge Hall of Singers, carefully lit and intended for Wagnerian performances. Passion for the Middle Ages did not prevent Ludwik from introducing modern technology. The castle has been equipped with a heating system that uses hot air circulation and a kitchen with running hot and cold water.

Construction of the castle began in September 1869 and lasted 17 years. The facility was opened in 1886. It is located in Germany, and precisely in southern Bavaria in the Alps. It was built on the order of King Ludwig II Wittelsbach. The initial version of the project was created by Christian Jank, and edited by Eduard Riedel and Georg von Dollmann

The castle is located on the ridge of the rock, it consists of many independent buildings. The oblong building is decorated with a lot of turrets, as well as garlanded balconies, battlements, fronts and sculptures. The castle has no defensive reinforcements known from the Middle Ages.

During the 17 years of construction, until the death of the king, 30 out of 90 rooms were ready, the remaining 60 rooms were not completed until today.

200 nuns embroidered for 7 years made silk padding on chairs and armchairs throughout the castle.

Every year, 500,000 people come here, they spend around 900,000 marks. Tourists move 35 kilometers of corridors and chambers and 400 steps of stairs every day.

Throne Room makes the most impression, is decorated with Byzantine splendor and almost entirely covered with gold.

The royal bedroom, designed in the neo-Gothic style, is decorated with paintings depicting the life of Tristan and Isolde.

Largest in the whole Hall of the Singers' Hall, decorated with frescoes depicting the life of Lohengrin and Parsifal. It was planned to play Wagnerian performances, however, Ludwik never heard Wagner's music in this room, the first Wagner concert took place here only over 60 years after his death.

Neuschwanstein is the most recognizable castle in the world, tourists can see it almost all year round. It is currently owned by the Free State of Bavaria.

The building has the following dimensions: length - 130 meters, area - 2557 m², castle volume - 67179 m³, number of storeys - 6, height of the main building - 56, 94 m, tower height - 79.16 m.

465 tons of marble were used for the construction, 400,000 tons bricks, 1550 tons of sandstone.

The castle was one of the finalists in the selection of the new seven wonders of the world, but did not make it to the best seven.
