Chartres Cathedral

Facts, informations and history of Chartres Cathedral

The foundations of the cathedral are thick, recessed into the ground to a depth of 8 meters, walls. They allow building stability and an absolutely even base.

The wooden structure of the roof was laid on the ground, and then, using the pulley blocks, it was pulled up to the upper edge of the walls. Scaffolding was also set, and the stones needed to build the roof were pulled in using a winch.

That the walls, made of rock-cut pillars, could lift the weight of the vault, buttresses were built, so-called buttresses connected with walls by means of buttresses.

On the west side of the cathedral there are two 90-meter spiers, Higher and more sophisticated comes from 1513, and lower and less sophisticated from the thirties of the thirteenth century.

Inside and outside the building there are over 10,000 stone and glass sculptures.

In the cathedral there are 160 colorful stained glass windows, they cover a total area of 2000m², among them you can find the famous Blue Rose or the Virgin Mary of Beautiful Glass. Colored pieces of glass were connected with each other by lead seams and iron rods.

Chartres Cathedral was the first in France dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. In the Middle Ages, every year there were four great indulgences, to which crowds of pilgrims gathered.
